Elvin "Barry" HaakensonOctober 1, 1929 ~ July 26, 2017 (age 87)
Elvin "Barry" Willard Haakenson, age 87, of rural Retreat died on July 26, 2017 at the Bethel Home in Viroqua. He was born on October 1, 1929 in Viroqua Township, Vernon County to Hjalmer and Amanda (Stalsberg) Haakenson. He attended school in Avalanche and Westby. He met the love of his life, Glenda West, at the Oriole Café in Viroqua where she worked. They were united in marriage on August 14, 1948 at Viroqua Methodist Church. They farmed with her parents, Horace and Lois (Host) West, at rural Retreat before moving to Paoli, WI for 9 years where Elvin drove a semi for 24 years for Paoli Mills. In 1961, they returned to rural Retreat. In 1978, they started farming with their son, Terry. They retired in 1992. Shortly after celebrating 50 years of marriage Glenda passed away from cancer in 1998. Elvin continued to help Terry on the farm and liked to spend time cutting wood and working in the garden, as well as spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Eventually he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's which led to his stay at the Bethel Home where he was described as kind, sweet and always smiling.
Elvin is survived by his children, Gary (Shirley) and Terry Haakenson, rural Retreat, and Jean (Greg) Roach, Elgin, IA, grandchildren, Mark (Sheryl) Haakenson, Cassondra and Elizabeth Roach, great-grandchildren, Roxanna, April, Shawnna and Ryan Haakenson, one sister-in-law, Shirley (Arnold) Haakenson and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Glenda, one daughter, Gloria, his three sisters, Julda Call, Amy Morrill and Helen Bjerkebek, his two brothers, Harlan and Arnold Haakenson, 2 sister-in-laws, Gwendlyn West (infancy) and Julia Mellem and one brother-in-law, Clendon West.
