Gene Gabrielson

June 10, 1935 ~ August 11, 2018 (age 83)

Gene “Geno” Harley Gabrielson, age 83, of Westby, passed away peacefully at the Norseland Nursing Home in Westby where he had been a resident since 2009. He was born on June 10th, 1935 to Bernard and Hazel (Hooverson) Gabrielson of Vernon County. He married Anita M. Ladue on March 22nd, 1958 and to them were born 5 children. They were later divorced, but remained best of friends. Anita passed away on June 18th, 2007. In 1954 Gene became a member of the 107th Red Arrow Division of the Army National Guard. In his early years he operated a small TV repair shop in Westby with his good friend Harold Dahlen for several years. He also farmed in rural Viroqua, then turned to carpentry work, in which he was highly skilled until his retirement. Gene was also very musically talented; he could play anything with strings or keys with ease, most notably the accordion. He played in several small polka & country bands, the longest being the Romance Ramblers. During his years at Norseland Nursing Home, Gene quickly became a great favorite to nurses and staff. Our heartfelt thanks go out to all of you who loved him and please know he felt the same about you.

            Gene is survived by one daughter Jeannie M. Ebben of Waupaca; 2 sons, Rex Gabrielson of Coon Valley, and Tony (Tasha Bolstad Cornell) Gabrielson of Westby; grandchildren, Justin, Tyler, Shane, Brett, Carissa, & Deven Gabrielson, Casey Kluck, and Kyle Erickson; great-grandchildren Quenten and John “J.J.” Schmit, Jonathon Olson, and Joshua Erickson. He also leaves to greatly mourn his passing his two sisters, Catherine “Kate” (Maynard) Sordahl of Manawa, WI and Judy Peterson of Viroqua, who was his caregiver, guardian, and best friend. A very special niece Missy Peterson, who shared his passion for baseball, especially the Brewers, plus many other interests. A sister-in-law, Esther Gabrielson of Westby, and a special great-niece Ella Simonson, to whom he proudly agreed to be her substitute Grandpa and from there on became known as “Grandpa Uncle Gene”, plus many special nieces, nephews and friends.

            He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sons, Jay W. Gabrielson, and Scott Gabrielson; His ex-wife Anita; one grandson, Steven Erickson; a brother, Gerald “Jack” Gabrielson; one son-in-law, Randy Ebben; and a special nephew, Kenneth Gabrielson; 2 brothers-in-law, Eugene Peterson and Al Chambers, as well as other family and friends.

            A Celebration Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, August 16th at 2 p.m. at the Thorson Funeral Home of Viroqua with Pastor Pete Beckstrand officiating. Burial will take place in the Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery with Military Honors. Family and friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.
