Helen Mae Christianson, age 93, of Viroqua, passed away peacefully at Vernon Memorial Hospital on Friday, February 9th, 2018. She was born on November 30th, 1924 to Ole and Regina (Nelson) Brothen. After the death of her mother at age 2, she and her sister, Francis were raised by their uncles, Norman and Albert Nelson. She married Harry Christianson on February of 1946. They farmed in rural Viroqua for many years. Helen also worked at the laboratory at Vernon Memorial Hospital from 1964 to 1991. Helen very much enjoyed working in her yard, caring to her garden and flowers, and could often be seen on her riding lawn mower until the age of 89. She also crocheted and knitted many afghans and hundreds of pairs of slippers that she gave away to family and friends. She also made quilts for each of her great-grandchildren. She and Harry spent 56 hardworking, but wonderful years until his death in 2001.
She is survived by her children: Diana Christianson of Milwaukee, Sherry (Mike) Riga of Watertown, Candace Johnson of Merrill, and Byron Christianson of De Soto; Christopher (Olga) Sutton of Madison, Jennifer (Bobby) Mathes of South Carolina, and Zackary (Jessica) Johnson of Merrill; great-grandchildren: Macy, Grayson, Harrison Mathes, and Yana, Braylon, Emmett Sutton; She is also survived by her dear sister, Francis Selin of Denver, CO, as well as many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband Harry; an infant son, Eric Jon; uncles: Norman and Albert Nelson; sisters: Ruth (Borge) Selin, Alice (Jack) Ingham, Grace (Clarence) Hanson; brothers: Thurman (Leilah) Brothen, Arnold (Ruth) Brothen, Harley (Helen) Brothen. She was also preceded by other family and friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, February 14th at 11 a.m. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua with Pastor Yvonne Marshall officiating. Burial will take place in the Bethel Lutheran Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 9 am until the time of the service at the church. Memorials are suggested to the family.
