Helen D. Wakefield

Helen Dale (Halverson) Wakefield, 92, passed away on October 2, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.  She was born in Viroqua, Wisconsin on May 4, 1925, to Olgert and Georgia (Dennis) Halverson.  She was baptized and confirmed at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua.  She graduated with honors from Viroqua High School in 1941 and attended Western Wisconsin Technical College until going to work at First National Bank in Viroqua.  Helen married Myron Wakefield in De Soto on January 19, 1944.  They lived on the Wakefield Century farm until January 2011 when they moved to La Crosse for health reasons.  They were members of New Hope (Redmound) United Methodist Church.  She served in many jobs with the church and was especially active in the Women’s Society.  She was treasurer of the Redmound School and served for 30 years as treasurer of the Town of Wheatland and part time in the Vernon County Treasurer’s office.  She worked for 2 years in the tobacco warehouse. 

Helen will be remembered for her love of gardening, cooking, canning, homemaking, and playing cards.  She particularly enjoyed her travels with Myron and her family to Alaska, England, Ireland, a Caribbean cruise, and most of the U.S., especially Wyoming. 

            Helen is survived by her 3 children, Tom (Karen) Wakefield of Wisconsin Dells, Nancy Wakefield of La Crosse, Neil (LaRae) Wakefield of Kansas City; two grandsons, Joe (Lori) Wakefield of Merrill and Jeff Wakefield of Viroqua; two granddaughters, Marcie (Stephen) Ashford of Plano, Texas, and Michelle (Clifford) Seastrom of Overland Park, Kansas; eight great-grandchildren, Montgomery, Emmalee, Sadie, Harrison, Wyatt, Haven, Brock and Eleanor; two sisters, Charlene (Dick) Poole of Forest, Virginia, and Karen (Jon) De Vine of Cary, Illinois; and one brother, Herman Skogh of Barrington, Illinois.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Myron, in 2011; her parents; her brother, Dennis Gale Halverson of Onalaska; her sister, Cleo Klahn of Viroqua and her great-granddaughter, Margaret Helen Ashford.

            Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, October 7th, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the New Hope United Methodist Church with Pastor Larry “Bubba” Stegall Officiating. Burial will take place at Walnut Mound Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. The family suggests memorials to New Hope UMC .
