Janet “Jan” Roou, age 83 longtime Viroqua teacher passed away on Tuesday, April 10th, 2018 at Gunderson Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. She was born on August 5, 1934 in Augusta, WI to Lorrin and Alma (Ringhand) Nelson. She graduated from Milwaukee Washington High School and the University of Wisconsin. In the fall of 1956 she began a career of teaching physical education at Viroqua Area Schools until her retiring in 19l93. While chaperoning a high school dance she met a student who introduced her to Charles “Chuck” Roou The student was Jack Roou, Chuck’s brother. Janet and Chuck were married on June 20, 1959. Chuck passed away on July 23, 1993. Jan’s accomplishments in life were many. First and foremost she was very intelligent and had many interests. She started Roou ball which is a four court volleyball game which has been going for over 25 years and is a homecoming tradition in Viroqua. Along with being a teacher, mentor, financial advisor she served as President of the Wisconsin Cemetery Society and Vernon County Historical Society. She was a true genealogist. In addition she was very athletic in tennis and golf. She also was a champion table tennis player. Her greatest accomplishment was that of Grandma. Her grandsons Brannon and Mitchell were her pride and joy. She shared information on them whenever she had the opportunity.
Jan is survived by daughters; Jayne (Kevin) Stalsberg of Viroqua and Mary (John) McLees, of Stoddard, grandsons, Brannon McLees and Mitchell Stalsberg, brother, Roger (Vivian) Nelson, of Arizona, brother in law, Jack (Pat) Roou of Viroqua. She is further survived by many loving nephews, step grandchildren and thousands of former students.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 14th, 2018 at the English Ev. Lutheran Church in Viroqua with Pastor Neal Behm officiating. Burial will be in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday, April 13th from 5- 7 at the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua. Friends may also call at the church after 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. The family suggests memorials to English Ev.
