Jerry L. Dull

April 11, 1938 ~ April 24, 2018 (age 80)

Jerry Lou Dull, 80, of Viroqua and formerly of Soldiers Grove passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 24, 2018, with his family by his side at the Bland-Bekkedal Center for Hospice Care in Viroqua. He was born April 11, 1938, to Gifford and Theressa (Olson) Dull and was the third in line of the “7 Dull brothers from Grove.” He attended Soldiers Grove High School, where he was starting guard on the basketball team and short stop for the baseball team. One of his fondest memories, which he shared with fellow teammates, was when the SGHS baseball team made it to the state tournament for the first time his senior year in 1956, placing third. After high school, Jerry married the late Marion (Dregne) Dull and they moved to California, where he served in the U.S. Army. While there, he attended San Francisco City College for a term, majoring in civil engineering, but decided he was making good money as a heavy machine operator and thus began his career in road construction. Jerry worked in road construction for close to 40 years, with the majority of them as superintendent for Ryan Inc., overseeing the construction of many subdivisions, landfills, highway and interstate projects, and building of the levy and spillway for Lake Galena in Illinois, which his daughter and son-in-law now live just above. Jerry’s brothers, father and nephews, also worked for Ryan’s over the years. After leaving California, Jerry and Marion returned to Soldiers Grove. Marion passed away March 8, 1981. Jerry had many fond memories of snowmobiling, traveling to Vegas and winning money from his friends playing cards over the years. In his later years, Jerry found joy spoiling his grandchildren.

Jerry is survived by his daughter, Vicki (Todd) Tunks of Galena, Ill.; his son, Terry (Meg O’Brien) Dull; and his grandchildren, Joey and Cole Tunks and Claire and Michael O’Brien-Dull; brothers, Jack, Gary, Jim and David. He is also survived many nieces, nephews, family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and two older brothers.

A memorial service will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua. Family and friends may call from 4 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place at a later date in the Kickapoo United Lutheran Cemetery.
