Norvin M. Mikkelson, age 92 of Viroqua, and formerly of rural Ferryville, passed away on December 14th, 2019 at the Bland Bekkedal Center for Hospice Care in Viroqua. He was born on December 21st, 1926 to Leo and Alma (Aspenson) Mikkelson on the family farm at South Buck Creek. On October 18th, 1947 he married Lila Holmes at the Kickapoo Parsonage. He worked as a milk hauler and cheesemaker at the Freeman Cheese Factory until January of 1949, when they started farming on South Buck Creek. They continued to farm until his retirement in 2011, when they moved to Viroqua. Norvin loved to travel, they would often put the camper on the pickup and away they’d go at the spur of a moment. He also loved to attend farm auctions. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and he will greatly be missed.
He is survived by his children David (Kristy) Mikkelson of Ferryville, Lonnie Mikkelson of Viroqua, Marilyn (Ernest) Nemec of Soldiers Grove, Mary (Rolland) Olson of Onalaska, and Cathy Boland of Seneca; grandchildren Daniel (Siri) Mikkelson, Loren Mikkelson, Duane (Lu Folgia) Mikkelson, Sheri Cartwright, Craig (Heidi) Stovey, Chad (Heidi) Stovey, Cory (Jennifer) Stovey, Shawna (Nick) Koch, Wade (Erika) Olson, Sara Olson, Andy (Amy) Olson, Kurt (Laura) Olson, Kelsey (Mike) Foley; as well as 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson and a sister Anna Marie Olson of Kenosha. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2016, a daughter-in-law Cheryl Mikkelson in 1977, a son-in-law John Boland in 2001, a great-grandson Carter Stovey in 2007, and brothers Milford, Lenard, and Junior; as well as other family and friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, December 21st at 1 p.m. at the Mt. Sterling Lutheran Church with Pastor Nile Sandeen officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Family and friends may call on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua, and again from 12 until the time of the service at the church.
