September 13, 1928 ~ July 16, 2020 (age 91)

Obituary

John Thomas Walsh Sr. “Tom”, age 91, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, July 16, 2020, due to complications of congestive heart failure. He was surrounded by his loving family. Tom was born at home on September 13, 1928 to Robert and Mary (Faye) Walsh in rural Soldiers Grove. Tom graduated in 1946 from Soldiers Grove High School. He joined the Army Air Corps right after high school and served during World War II in the Intelligence Office. Tom married Ramona Larson on May 5, 1951. Together they raised nine children. She passed away on December 21, 1991. Tom farmed in Yankeetown for many years, until he went to work on the road doing construction for several companies.  He ended his career working for H James and Sons of Fennimore, WI. Tom enjoyed hunting as a young person, playing sports in school, and he built the family barn by himself. Tom enjoyed many years of playing cards with friends, golfing as often as he could, traveling, and spending time with his family. Every Sunday, family and friends would gather, and Tom would grill BBQ chicken. There were card games, lots of laughter, where all were welcome, and no one left hungry. Tom was proud of his military service and never missed an opportunity to honor his fellow comrades. He was a proud member of the American Legion Post 220 in Soldiers Grove. In 2014 Tom was able to partake in the Honorary Freedom Flight to Washington D.C. He was a lifetime member of the Operating Engineers Local 139.

Tom is survived by his partner of 28 years, Kathryn Krueger, his 9 children Tom (Cheryl) Walsh Jr, Susan Kemp, Patrick (Ruth) Walsh, Mary Walsh, Michael (Marla) Walsh, Lisa Nicks, Robert (Kristin) Walsh, Matthew (Karen Johnson) Walsh, and Jo Ellen Chamberlain; Kathryn’s two sons, Brian and Chris (Korie) Krueger, and their children Josie & Ethan; sister Kathryn Walsh; brother Paul (Joan) Walsh; sister in law Deidra Larson, Phyllis Larson, Mary Jane Larson, Vicky Larson, and Florence Campbell; as well as 26 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ramona, son-in-law Kenneth Kemp, brothers Lawrence, Michael, and Robert; sister Mary Faye Ostenson; brothers-in-law Michael Larson, Terry Larson, Cecil Larson, Philip Larson, and Burlie Campbell.
